New paper: “Global Innovation Strategies of German Hidden Champions in Key Emerging Markets”

Working_Paper_85A new paper by Stephan Buse and Rajnish Tiwari of the Center for Frugal Innovation at the Hamburg University of Technology that examines product and market cultivation strategies employed by German mid-sized firms (“Mittelstand”) in the BRIC nations, especially China and India. The paper was preseneted at the XXV ISPIM Conference – Innovation for Sustainable Economy & Society, Dublin, Ireland on 8-11 June 2014.

New paper: “Frugal innovation and analogies: some propositions for product development in emerging economies”

Working_Paper_84A new paper that seeks to generate some preliminary insights on the use of inventive analogies in the process of creating frugal innovations. The paper has been authored by Rajnish Tiwari, Katharina Kalogerakis and Cornelius Herstatt and was presented at the recently-held R&D Management Conference (June 3-6, 2014) in Stuttgart.

Abstract

Frugal products and services aim at satisfying the unsaturated demand of a large and growing middle class in many “emerging economies”. Although research has been conducted in regard to the strategic importance of frugal innovations, so far, the actual development process of such innovations has not been looked into in detail. Some examples show that inventive analogies are used to develop frugal innovations. For instance, the development of a frugal artificial heart was based on the heart structure of cockroaches, which led to a reduction of costs by 20 times.

“Changing Dynamics of Lead Markets: A New Role for Emerging Economies as Innovation Hubs”

An article by Rajnish Tiwari and Cornelius Herstatt, published in The European Financial Review, issue April/May 2014, pp. 69-72.

Lead markets play a crucial role in the global diffusion of innovations. Innovative firms actively seek access to such markets whilst policy makers, especially in Europe, have attempted to foster lead markets by concerted policy measures. Below, Rajnish Tiwari and Cornelius Herstatt suggest that the conventional wisdom on the emergence and functioning of lead markets needs a rethink to better reflect the changing dynamics in the global economy, and argue that dynamic economic growth in largely unsaturated markets and increasing technological capabilities are letting new lead markets emerge in the developing world.

Der Erfolg frugaler Produkte ist nicht aufzuhalten!

Center for Frugal Innovation @ TUHH„Deutsche Baumaschinen zu gut für den Weltmarkt“ titelte Die Welt am 17.4.2013. Deutsche Maschinenbauer werden dem Bericht zufolge trotz Innovationstrophäen von den Märkten der Schwellenländer verdrängt. Die Gründe sind sowohl die fehlende Zahlungskraft als auch die abnehmende Zahlungsbereitschaft lokaler Kunden. Anstelle hoch komplexer („over-engineered“) und damit einhergehend teurer Produkte fragen sie erschwingliche und robuste Technik nach, die häufig aus anderen Ländern und insbesondere aus den Schwellenländern selbst kommt. Solche „good enough“ Produkte, Lösungen mit ausreichender Funktionalität bei guter Qualität und einem sehr wettbewerbsfähigen Preisniveau, kennzeichnen den Innovationsansatz „fugaler Innovationen“.
